A Message From 5116 Magazine Street Corporation

The beginning of the month of September saw two proud “Prepper” activities . . . 

First, there was the Big Sister/Little Sister celebration spearheaded by Kathy Corbett and her committee wherein they donated not only time, but their treasure to make this long standing tradition an unforgettable experience for the classes of 2026 and 2029.
 





Then, on the very next day, more than 1,000 graduates of “The Prep” came together for an all alumni class picnic organized by the Class of 1992. While some did not know what to expect, the experience proved to be more moving than anyone could have imagined.

Both events were joyful celebrations, one the start of memories, friendship, and shared experiences and the other a reflection of the same. These gatherings were a beautiful reflection of our time at “The Prep” and a reminder of the powerful bond we share.  

As members of the 5116 Magazine Street Corporation, the group that stepped forward over a decade ago to purchase the school from the Sisters and keep the legacy ongoing, we still continue to be inspired by the mission and vision of St. Katharine Drexel. Her legacy is the foundation of our work and the guiding light that led us through uncertain times when many thought it could not be done. With faith, dedication, and the support of countless alumni and friends, “The Prep” has endured. 

The mission of “The Prep” was and forever will be to improve the local educational community for young, minority youth and to prepare them for successful careers and lives as strong, compassionate leaders. This commitment remains at the heart of everything we do. 

While the financial challenges remain, we hold fast to our belief in what we often call the Miracle on Magazine Street. And as we look ahead to the 2025–2026 school year, our focus remains not only on honoring St. Katharine’s mission, but on ensuring it thrives for generations to come. 

Today, “The Prep” stands at a pivotal moment. Like many schools in New Orleans, we are navigating a time of transition, beginning the year with the smallest student body in our history. But with every challenge comes opportunity. Now, more than ever, we are calling on our community: alumni, supporters, and friends. Together, we need to stand united, to speak with one voice, and to act with purpose.

Let us come together not just to celebrate our past, but to build a future that uplifts our current students and strengthens the institution we love. The road ahead requires faith, unity, and renewed commitment but we know that with your continued support, “The Prep” will survive and thrive.
