St. Katharine Drexel Preparatory School joins the New Orleans community and the nation in honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Norman C. Francis — visionary educator, servant leader, and steadfast champion of Catholic education.
As President of Xavier University of Louisiana for nearly five decades, Dr. Francis shaped generations of leaders and elevated Xavier to national prominence. His leadership extended far beyond campus walls, influencing education, civil rights, and public service across our city and country. His unwavering belief in access, excellence, and faith-centered education continues to inspire institutions like ours.
Our connection to Dr. Francis is both meaningful and historic. His beloved wife, Blanche Macdonald Francis, was a proud graduate of Xavier Prep, Class of 1943, before earning her degree in physical education from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1948 and pursuing postgraduate study at Indiana University.
Mrs. Francis was a distinguished civic leader and educator in her own right. A gracious mentor and steadfast advocate for young people, she devoted her life to service across New Orleans and beyond. She served on numerous boards and organizations including the YMCA, Second Harvest Food Bank, Hope Haven, Covenant House, WYES, the Louisiana State Museum, Notre Dame Seminary, St. Joseph Seminary, and Xavier Preparatory School. She also led the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital as President, participated in The Links, helped organize the local Scripps National Spelling Bee, and was honored with an honorary doctorate from Our Lady of Holy Cross College for her extraordinary community service.
Following Hurricane Katrina, Mrs. Francis joined the Women of the Storm delegation in Washington, D.C., advocating for restoration and support for the Gulf Coast — further reflecting her lifelong commitment to civic responsibility and justice.
During his tenure at Xavier University, Dr. Francis supported and strengthened the enduring relationship between Xavier University and Xavier Prep, recognizing the powerful legacy of Black Catholic education in New Orleans and the generations of young women formed within it.
Together, Dr. and Mrs. Francis modeled faith, leadership, scholarship, and service. Their legacy lives on in the institutions they strengthened and in the countless lives they touched.
We give thanks for their example and remain committed to continuing the work they so faithfully advanced: educating young women of faith, excellence, and purpose.
May they rest in eternal peace.
